Board Member
PURPOSE: Governing body With
other members of the Board of Directors, is responsible for oversight of
the activities of the agency.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
Specific duties: Establishes
and/or continues the legal or corporate existence of the agency. Ensures
that the agency meets the legal requirements for the conduct of the
agency business. Responsible for adopting, reviewing and/or modifying
by‑laws and ensuring that the agency operates within them. Adopts
policies which determine the purposes, and governing principles of
the agency.
DETERMINATION OF SERVICES OFFERED
BY THE AGENCY
Specific duties: Reviews and determines
what services will be offered by the agency. Ensures sufficient financial support
to continue products and services offered by the agency to its clients.
EVALUATION
Specific duties: Evaluates and
reviews the agency's operations, products, services and activities.
Monitors the activities of the agency, including: reviewing reports
of appropriate committees; reviewing minutes of meetings; confirming
grants and/or contracts applied for by the agency; reviewing evaluation
data and reports.
APPELLATE BOARD
Specific duties: Serves as appellate
board regarding personnel and policy decisions of the Executive Director.
Provides direction and guidance to the Executive Director regarding
procedures for implementing policy decisions of the Board.
PERSONNEL
Specific duties: Selects and
employs the Executive Director. Approves policies which govern
the administration of personnel. Participates in recruitment, selection
and development of board members, where primary responsibility for
this activity is assigned to a nominating committee.
FINANCE
Specific duties: Monitors the
corporate finances of the agency through the review of appropriate
reports. Creates a financial climate for fulfilling the agency's
purpose. Ensures that sufficient funds are available for the agency
to meet its objectives and obligations.
PUBLIC AWARENESS
Specific duties: Gives sponsorship
and prestige to the agency and inspires confidence in its services.
Understands and interprets the work of the agency to the community.
Relates the services of the agency to the work of other agencies/constituency
groups. Provides information about the work of the agency to local
and community groups. Provides information to the board regarding the
needs of the local community or constituency groups represented by
the board members. Promotes the products and services offered by the
agency.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:

demonstrated interest in the agency's goals. |
| . Specific
knowledge and/or experience beneficial to the goals of the
agency. |
| . Knowledge
of, or interest in, children/youth and their families. |
| . Sufficient
time available to commit to board and committee meetings. |
| . A
majority of the board must be parents of children with disabilities. |
