Violence Prevention

The Parent Information Center offers violence prevention resources and Bullying workshops to parents and schools. There is a growing need for parents, schools and communities to find ways to prevent violence in our schools. Schools must feel safe in order for students to achieve. As stated in the 2002 U.S. Department of Education Executive summary of Indicators of School Crime and Safety, “Schools should be safe and secure places for all students, teachers, and staff members. Without a safe learning environment, teachers may have difficulty teaching and students may find their environment a difficult one in which to learn.” Though the percentage of students reporting being victims of crime at school has decreased between 1995 and 2001, still numerous students are being victimized at school. Much of the victimization is unreported and the “scars” from the assaults, be they verbal or physical, can last for a lifetime. As teachers, parents, community members and students, we must work together to promote safety in our schools, to understand what bullying is and how to prevent it, to recognize the effects of violence in our media upon our children’s health and well-being, and to learn ways to communicate respectfully and recognize the gifts in diversity.
