Working Together With Your Child’s School to Solve a Bullying Problem
Keep a record of all incidents reported to you by your child. Keep notes of everyone you speak to and copies of any letters you write.
Contact your child’s teacher to set up an appointment to meet. (Let the teacher know that this is an urgent matter).
Make a list of the points you want to cover before the meeting so you won’t forget anything.
Explain your concerns to the teacher in a friendly, non-confrontational manner: Be calm, courteous, firm and polite. Do not lose your temper, shout or swear.
Ask the teacher if she or he has noticed anything going on and ask her/him to keep an eye on the situation.
Ask the teacher for suggestions on how to handle the problem.
Arrange for a follow up meeting so that you can discuss any action that has been proposed.
Be sure to give the school sufficient time to deal with the situation since bullying can be a difficult problem to solve.
After the meeting, make a note over everything that has been decided and give a copy to the teacher.
If you don’t get anywhere with the teacher, do not give up – speak to someone else. (the principal, then the school board)
Seek legal action as a last resort.
