My suggestion to you would be to call another IEP meeting and make sure the IEP is ammended to deal with the homework issue. (You can do this any time) It is very well known that children with ADHD have issues with homework (you will read this every time you pick up a book on ADHD) and you will even hear it from other parents who have children with ADHD, that homework often gets done, but the kids just don't turn it in. IT IS PART OF THE DISABILITY. I went through it with my child. Make sure the IEP requires teachers to allow the late homework, or have teacher's personally ask your child for the homework, or have an aide responsible for collecting it to turn in. Give some suggestions at the meeting, and come to an agreement as to how it will be handled in the IEP. Remember, the IEP is a legal document, and the teachers and school have to abide by what is written in it. Doesn't mean they will do it, so you will have to be vigilent on staying on top of it so it gets done. I know several people, including my child's IEP, that states we are to be notified ASAP about missing homework. There is no excuse for a parent finding out through a progress report or a report card that your child is flunking because of missing homework. You can even e-mail all your child's teachers every week to find out if they are missing something from your child, and you can put something in the IEP requiring the teachers to respond to your messages. Parents of children with ADHD have a very long and frustrating task ahead of them in getting their children through to 12th grade, and I believe the reason is still that ADHD is not recognized as a true disability and the attitude is that our children are lazy, dumb or that they simply just don't care, when all they need is to be recognized and get the assistance they need. Fight for the right of your child to receive a quality education like all children are entitled to.
